Pardon My French
A statistical look at sports
ABOUT ME
My name is Tyler French, and I am a sports nerd. I grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles and loved all things L.A. I couldn’t get enough sports. Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, and USC were everything to me. Even though they are Los Angeles, I never connected with the Clippers or UCLA. And I will NEVER be able to call the Angels the “Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.” I don’t care what anyone says. When my teams would lose, I would get physically ill. I hated it. My mood was based on their success. Luckily the Lakers went on their championship run during that time. As I got older, my allegiances became weaker. I started to focus more on the trends, patterns, and strategies rather than worrying if my team won. I love being able to watch any (and I mean ANY) two teams play, but I did miss some of the highs and lows of being a true fan. I have now found a nice middle ground between the two extremes, and I am just as enthusiastic about sports as ever. The only person who doesn’t love my love of sports might be my wife. Instead of only watching one team, she now “gets” to watch as many games as I do! She’s so lucky.

I graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 2014 and Grand Canyon University with my MBA in 2017. During my studies, I found that statistical data fascinated me. I started looking at everything differently and wanted to find causation/correlation in anything I could. I realized sports is the perfect place for that, and I was immediately hooked. My two favorite hobbies combined! I had the opportunity to work with a few collegiate football programs providing reports, data, and game plans for about three years. I have created reports for multiple sports to answer questions that kept coming to me. Some tests and data show direct causation or correlation, and some come up inconclusive. It is all part of the fun for me.

It is my hope with this blog, that I will spark some discussion about the topics presented. I am also very interested in what you want to know! If you have questions or a theory, send it over to me, and I’ll run the reports. I think the sports world is a great place to debate and have fun. Hopefully, you’ll learn something too. Now, I know the internet is where all opinions are changed, so if your view differs from mine or anyone else, PLEASE be respectful. I love debate, but this environment is one to root for your favorite teams and players, and learn more about how your favorite sports are played.
